The New Bedford Whalers Youth Football organization announces that it has joined the Blackstone Valley Youth Football and Cheerleading Conference, a member of American Youth Football, for the Fall 2010 season. American Youth Football, Inc., established in 1996, is an international youth football organization established to promote the wholesome development of youth through their association with adult leaders in the sport of American football. Rules and regulations are established to ensure that players play in an atmosphere of safety with a competitive balance between teams. AYF is the fastest growing youth organization in America; founded in 1996 American Youth Football has grown to over 600,000 members with leagues in all 50 states, Canada, Mexico, Western Europe, and Asia.
After two very successful seasons in the RISMA Conference, the Whalers are making the switch to AYF to provide opportunities for all the children of New Bedford and the surrounding communities, including those children who couldn’t traditionally participate in youth football. Blackstone Valley’s age and grade based program is unique in Southeastern Massachusetts and allows children to compete with and against other children in their own grade and with the same children they play with on the playground and at home. Blackstone Valley’s strong tradition in football and cheerleading and their success at the New England Region and National levels provides a highly competitive environment for our football teams and cheer squads.
It has always been the intent of the Whalers organization to offer football and cheer to all youth in New Bedford. The switch to AYF now allows even more kids to join the action. All children from New Bedford and surrounding towns, ages 5 to 15, are able to participate.
A spokesman for the Whalers stresses that the merger of the Wildcats and Broncos from the Greater NB Football League was a great success and we are now taking the next giant step forward, making football and cheer available to additional Greater New Bedford children.
